There are plenty of complex theories about the nature of hypnosis. The simplest and most useful definition, in my opinion, is that hypnosis is a state of focused attention. The hypnotist, in cooperation with the client, guides the client into this focused state because it allows for rapid and profound beneficial changes in our thoughts and feelings. Experiments have shown particular brainwave patterns associated with the state of hypnosis. These brainwave patterns are very similar to those seen in young children. Just think for a moment, of how open and imaginative the minds of young children are and how quickly they learn new things. Using hypnosis we access a similarly receptive learning states which allow us to let go of old outdated ways of thinking and feeling and replace them with new updated information, which allows us to easily achieve what we want. The hypnotic state can be profoundly relaxing and enjoyable and clients remain fully aware of what is taking place throughout.
